The football game is for reinforcing the reading of sound pictures and the spelling of non-phonetic words or word families. Alternating the play, the player takes a card from the top of the sound picture deck and writes the word using the correct spelling. When the word is spelled correctly the player may take a card from the play deck and move the football on the field as stated by the play card. Play starts at the 50 yard line.
The ball is moved up and down the field as each play indicates. Upon scoring, the ball is returned to the 50 yard line. When the play deck is completed or the time allotted for play runs out the game ends.
The player with the highest score is declared the winner. This game may be played in quarters over a period of days by setting a time limit for play or by selecting the number of spelling words to review.
At the end of the 4 quarters, the winner is declared.
